About

I am passionate about medical education, teaching, and research. I have always enjoyed education, and obtained my Teaching Certification in 2001. My experiences while working at a self-paced high school early in my teaching career gave me a unique perspective on how people learn, and motivated me to pursue graduate studies to develop a deeper understanding of how to support effective teaching, learning, and assessment.
I completed my Masters in Learning & Development in 2003, and was awarded my PhD in Measurement & Evaluation in 2008 from the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership Studies at the University of Victoria. I draw upon these experiences in my work to study how we train physicians, and work to make that training better.
My passion is to identify and promote best practices in medical education. I have been an active member of education-related working groups and committees at the CFPC since 2009, and I have represented the interests of family medicine education at national and international events and at other professional organizations. As Past President (now) and President (2020-2022) of the Canadian Association for Medical Education, I work with medical educators to promote, advance, and recognize excellence in medical education in Canada. Along with my many collaborators and colleagues, we advocate for greater recognition of the importance of medical education research in an effort to elevate the crucial role it plays in good clinical practice.
I joined the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta in 2008 as an Assistant Professor, and I was promoted to Professor in 2021. In my role, I work to integrate medical education and interdisciplinary research into curriculum to develop and implement best practices in medical education in Canada and around the world. While my research spans multiple areas of health profession education, my main focus is competency-based assessment.
In my non-work life, I enjoy spending time with my family and working in my yard.
